Edit guys quit asking me every goddamn spot you can keep car keys or vehicular sleeping scenarios. I’m not a cop or lawyer Yup my friend got charged few years ago, because he was sleeping in the driver seat and he had the key fob in his pocket. So he got multiple tickets. I was always told to leave keys in the trunk and sleep in the back seat. I only ever had the guts to try it once, but the car was in a Wal Mart parking lot so I wasn’t going to get in trouble anyway. Used to be chain wide policy but the shit heels who abuse such privileges have resulted in some stores not allowing it. The chains like it because people come shop first thing, use any attached restaurants, etc and it builds brand loyalty. I was approached as I woke up in a Walmart parking lot by police, subsequently searched and arrested on other charges. Cop told me that in the state of California, “camping” (sleeping in a parked car) is illegal anywhere. They do, however, have “safe parking sites” where people can sleep in their vehicles. I ended up finding one in a church parking lot that allowed it and lived there for a while. But, if what the cop told me is accurate, I’d assume the “safe parking sites” are a kind of loophole, in that you are sleeping on private property where the owner of said property has given you permission to do so (in this case, by publicly listing themselves as a safe site). It’s crazy the amount of BS you have to go through when you’re homeless. It got even worse once I didn’t have a car to shelter in—falling asleep pretty much anywhere becomes illegal very quickly when you have no shelter to bring with you.

I just don’t understand that because here in my car, I feel safest of all. I can lock all my doors. It’s the Friends inspired I’ll be there for you shortsleeve classic shirt But I will love this only way to live- in cars. When I was in my early twenty’s we were out at the bar sitting on the patio. Some drunk girl stumbled out to her SUV and crawled into the back seat to sleep it off. Someone must have called the cops because they showed up about 5 minutes later. She was out cold so they decided to break the back window right on top of her. We just heard the most ear piercing scream as this drunk chick woke up covered in glass with people surrounding her and flashlights in her face. Then they started yelling at her to get out of the car and she was just panicked screamed some more and went into a protective ball. They ended up dragging this poor 110 lb drunk girl out through the glass and gravel and handcuffed her face down in parking lot. To say they were not gentle is putting it mildly. The entire patio was watching and yelling at them.
